Tell me about the outfit you are wearing – who are you cosplaying and how did you decide to pick this particular character ?
I am cosplaying Black Star from Soul Eater. It was actually picked by my friends because I was best suited for the character. I actually was annoyed by the character at the start of the series, but as it progressed I became to like the character more than any of the others in the series. He is fun and energetic which is fun to cosplay as, but I wouldn’t want to be like him all the time, it would get to be to much after awhile.
Tell me about the process of making your outfit – was it easier or tougher than you imagine it to be ?
Well the costume was a premade costume I had bought, but after seeing the shoddy workmanship I ended up modifying a lot on the cosplay itself. I also made the Kusarigama form of Tsubaki which was my first venture into prop making. I had a lot guidance from a close friend on making. It was rather time consuming because I was doing it all by hand, but it really was worth it in the end.
Any interesting stories from people’s reaction to your outfit at the con ? ^^
Oh, where to start with this question. I would have to go with being a beacon at any con. Bright blue hair attracts a lot of attention funny enough, so I would be walking around and halfway across a crowded room I would hear Black Star!! and as any proper response for a Black Star I would shout out Yahooooo! The one of the best reactions was a younger girl who turned around saw me, dropping her bag and tried to say something and nothing intelligible would come out. She raised her arms and said please for a hug. I couldn’t help but smile and said yes. With that she launched her self at me giving me a very strong hug which was impressive for her small size.
How did you get started cosplaying and what got you interested?
I never really tried to cosplay I was always impressed with how some people would put so much time and effort into some of the cosplays to make them near perfect. I had a friend approach me asking to cosplay with her for AnimeVegas 2006. She was going to do Yoruichi and she wanted me to be Urahara and another friend who did Tessai. I was so much fun I wanted to find other characters to cosplay and became addicted to it.
What are the con did you first attended and what’s your favorite con that you’ve attended so far and why ?
Well I have been going to anime conventions since Otakon 2004. My favorite is really hard to pick out, but I am going to go with Katsucon 2009. The people I met made it incredibly fun and so memorable.
What does cosplay mean to you ?
It is fun for me to take on the roll of a character for a brief time. Getting my picture taken and getting to see people that recognize me and others that cosplay from the series. It is enjoyable to work and feel accomplished making something myself and people commenting on the way it looks. I like taking on characters that I fit physically and somewhat act like when I need to so I can have good poses.
If you had unlimited funds/technology/time, what is your dream cosplay ?
This one is easy to answer. Ronin Warriors. It was my first and favorite series of all time. I am currently working on Cale of the Dark Warlords from that series, but lack of knowledge and skill it may not turn out perfect, but I would love to redo it with the best of materials and tools. Though I most likely would make Sage of the Halo seeing he was my favorite from the series.
