Tell me about the outfit you are wearing – who are you cosplaying and how did you decide to pick this particular character ?
I was cosplaying Master Chief and Old Snake from metal gear solid 4 and halo video game series. I figured these 2 characters are the most well recognized from the last generation and current generation consoles that I wanted to try what I called “CrossOver play” which I take 2 characters and combine them together to make them look awesome.
At Anime Expo 2009 it was real popular! For the days I went lots of people did a double take and almost 80% of the people would yell or say “THAT EXPLAINS IT!”. So I dubbed this cosplay “THE TRUTH”.
Old Snake’s costume was hard to figure out and it took me months to put everything together including making the solid eye glow. Master Chief’s armour, I bought on a website and then modified the visor due to its cheapness.
I tried doing this crossover play at Wondercon 2009 but it really didnt do much with Master Chief’s helmet with a oversized solid eye and a oversized mustache.
Any interesting stories from people’s reaction to your outfit at the con ? ^^
Solid Chief or Master Snake as alot of the people called it was a real popular hit at Anime expo, at least the old snake face and master cheif body variation.
How did you get started cosplaying and what got you interested ?
I got into cosplaying in 2003 when I saw that there was a community dedicated to creating or recreating costumes from video games and anime, so I sought a group that was new to the community and we all went to our very 1st convention. Im the only one in the group that still cosplays and continues to perfect the craft.
What are the con did you first attended and what’s your favorite con that you’ve attended so far and why ?
FanimeCon in San Jose is my 1st anime convention and will always be my favorite! I like the fact that at Fanime, despite your regular weirdos at conventions and power hungry con-ops, it still feels like im connected to people who show up here. I went to Anime Expo and it just didnt feel the same, I also love the fact that Fanime is open 24 hours during the convention, For example if I wanted to go to the game room at 2am in the morning, I have that choice. And I just know more people there so I always have someone to say hi to or hang out with.
What does cosplay mean to you ?
Cosplay means a lot to me, I don’t geek out and cosplay outside of conventions but I love the fact I can basically “Log Out” of the real life and pretend to be characters in a video game. Seeing people’s reactions to these cosplays is the payoff for me, and I love showing it off for pictures and doing photoshoots. Seeing these favorite characters in real life and recreating moments in the games and scenes from anime give me a really good feeling I’ve been looking for all these years.
If you had unlimited funds/technology/time, what is your dream cosplay ?
My dream cosplay is F.R.O.G Haven Trooper from Metal Gear Solid 4 and my ultimate is GUYVER from the GUYVER anime/live action series.
