Cosplay in America exhibition

The term cosplay was coined by Nobuyuki Takahashi of the Japanese studio Studio Hard, after he witnessed people dressed in costumes at the 1984 sci-fi convention, WorldCon.

While the use of the word cosplay may be new, costuming in a convention setting itself has been around for decades here in the United States. In recent years, cosplay has exploded in popularity as a way for people to show their fandom.

Walk into any pop culture convention today - comic book, anime, sci-fi, gaming - and one is bound to see cosplayers of different sizes, shapes, ages and races all celebrating their love of fandom. It’s not unusual to see a Storm Trooper or Superman at an anime convention, or to see Sailor Moon or a Power Ranger at a comic con. While some may purchase their costumes, others chose to spend countless hours crafting their outfit. For them, the process is part of the experience of cosplaying.
