Tell me about the outfit you are wearing – who are you cosplaying and how did you decide to pick this particular character ?
My costume is Super Sailor Venus, from Sailor Moon. This is a costume I’ve been wanting to do ever since I began cosplaying, so I’m really excited that I finally got around to doing it, and got my best friend in on it as Super Sailor Mars as well.
Tell me about the process of making your outfit – was it easier or tougher than you imagine it to be ?
Well, Kikala and I (Sailor Mars) pretty much worked together on making these, since the designs are so similar, so a lot of the things were patterned/cut out at the same time, to make sure they were exact. We altered patterns for the leotard, but everything else was drafted from scratch.
My shoes were originally white pumps, painted a custom orange to match the fabric, which just so happened to be recycled from an old dress I wore once.The tiaras and broaches were made from craft foam and model magic. Since I’ve been planning this costume for so long, I’ve had a LOT of time to research it and gather information on how other cosplayers made their uniforms, so I approached it with a really great understanding of how things were going to work together.
So all in all, it was a lot easier than expected, but I was definetely thorough in my research to make sure I made things to my standards.
Any interesting stories from people’s reaction to your outfit at the con ? ^^
Haha, nothing in particular comes to mind, other than a lot of people really liked our costumes, and praised us for our accuracy on the colors and design. Unfortunatly, with the nature of the costume, we also came across a lot of unwanted male attention, but nothing to horrendous that we couldn’t just laugh off.
How did you get started cosplaying and what got you interested ?
Oh man, I always love this question, because I remember the exact time and place that I realized I wanted to be a part of the cosplay scene. In 2004, at A-kon 15, Limited Break cosplay (Cherry and Gren) did a short little Kingdom Hearts skit, and I was so enthralled with the game at the time, that I couldn’t believe it was socially acceptable at conventions to dress up as your favorite character. I knew right then that I was going to make my own costume and wear it to the next convention, and this event spurred on many many more costumes and conventions henceforth .:)
What are the con did you first attended and what’s your favorite con that you’ve attended so far and why ?
First convention was A-kon 15, and my favorite would definetely have to be AnimeFEST. It’s a small con, and nothing exciting really happens event wise, but the cosplay is always fun to see and be a part of, and I always love catching up with friends that I don’t normally get to see.
What does cosplay mean to you ?
Dressing up, expressing yourself and having fun with friends. Funnest hobby EVER. It may be expensive at times, but the memories made and the times we share together in costume make it all the more worth while.
If you had unlimited funds/technology/time, what is your dream cosplay ?
Awesome question! Super Sailor Venus was my dream costume :)
